The original brief was to design a semi recessed, minimum projection handrinse basin at an affordable price.
The Parmis is an innovative space saving handrinse basin ideal for cloakrooms and other small spaces. It is designed to be inset into a wall with the bottle trap and service pipework exposed. The semi recessed basin has two tap holes, overflow and a minimal projection of just 170mm.
A Brief History of the Twyford Parmis Handrinse Basin
The Parmis handrinse basin was originally designed for The Scottish Housing Association. The concept of recessing a handrinse basin into the wall as a space saving feature, was valued by architects, but the Barbican basin's cost and concealed plumbing often proved prohibitive.
The Parmis allowed implementation of the Parker Morris standard with the architects requirement for a minimum projection handrinse basin at an affordable price.
Munroe Blair, Product Development Manager at Twyfords, designed the Parmis and supervised the modelling of a full size clay mock up for approval. The basin recessed into a standard 100 mm studding wall and was available with one or two taps and exposed service and waste plumbing. The product was approved by the Scottish Housing architects and became an immediate success for housing, schools and hospitals. The Parmis proved to be a very popular, cost effective alternative to the Barbican. It was widely used throughout the world, until it was finally discontinued under Geberit in 2018. The official de-listing date was 30th March 2018.
